<image:caption>“Opera”. Acrylic on 41 cms circular wooden board 2011 Chinese Opera. The painting above was from a classical concert at Government house pre handover I sat behind the woman with the perfectly groomed hair with the two big combs that were slowly falling out but she didn’t seem to notice. Often I go back to old sketch books & collage together different images to tell a story, the Chinese Opera singer & the two Chinese women near the performer were taken years later but they seemed to work well together.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Tai Tai’s”. Acrylic on 41 cms circular wooden board 2011 Tai Tais are a favourite subject of mine, I adore the Tang dynasty figurines of the affluent large women of their day. They have featured in a lot of my images & sculptures, I have tried to make my own modern version. These two ladies if it was real would have been at an art preview. The word “Tai Tai” in Chinese is the word for wife or directly translates into big big or too much… though modern day Tai-Tais are a lot skinnier, the woman on the right is taken from images in HK glossy magazines, the society sections with all the little squares of the glamourous people, one of my greatest sources for reference material!</image:caption>

Acrylic on 41 cms circular wooden board 2011 The mini bus system in Hong Kong is such a quick way of getting around the number 31 is one of my regular routes though I always try to sit near the driver as they dont have a bell so you have to shout out when you want them to stop & I always feel too self conscious hearing my “Gweilo” foreign voice yelling “neeedoo mmgoy” or next stop please! So this painting above is the view from his large rear mirror. The tissue box attached above the driver is the latest tulip design from my local ‘Parkin’ Shop’ store when I made the painting.</image:caption>

Above image is from the then Regent Hotel, where every floor was lavish with food & people dressed in Chinese English outfits. The waiters started the evening in Union Jack jackets that after midnight were reversed into the red & yellow starred Chinese flag. The lady in red with the sparkly dress was in the queue waiting to use the bathroom, I moved her to walk past the leering man smoking a cigar holding two glasses of red wine, behind his trail of cigar smoke is a guy dribbling the juice from his oyster</image:caption>

The word Tai Tai directly translates as Big Big, too much or a certain type of affluent wife. Though Tai Tai’s today tend to be a lot skinnier, these ladies are both wearing low cut typical silk Chinese style patterned outfits. The traditional terracotta figurines are often sculpted holding their dogs, which I have replaced with handbags & glasses of wine socialising at private views or functions around town. Life cast of a woman with hands on her hips, to help her balance as she didn’t like the process of being cast. commissioned as a memory of their courting days. A small bumble bee traces their travels across a painted globe. The bodice is decorated in a Qing dynasty style, with two long thin dragons that form the neckline. Whilst making this the woman went very pale & fainted apparently it was whilst applying the bandages near her neck. Her husband thinking she would never let me cast her again, stopped me from ripping off the mould, so we slowly lowered her to the floor to save the mould, luckily she & the mould were fine.</image:caption>

By day a male model: his modelling card can be seen on his dressing-room table, in front of the oval mirror with my reflection in it. He turned heads, both as a man and as a woman. The bas-relief (right) is a scene from the Vauxhall Tavern at amateur drag night with Glitz - or Gary - in his full regalia, in sequins and feathers lip-syncing; 'My old man'... while Lily Savage, the compere, sits reading 'her' newspaper and ignoring the acts. During the late 1980s, I became friends with a transvestite called Penny/Robert who introduced me to many places and people that inspired a series of work about drag queens. Sadly, many of these people are no longer alive.</image:caption>

I tried to stay as invisible as possible so I could sketch & get enough images to create this image, drawing in night clubs is fairly easy as there are always tables tucked away in a dark corner somewhere. Living in the East End it seemed there were endless pockets of very different worlds behind closed doors. This relief was bought by the Homerton Hospital in Hackney.</image:caption>

The City & Broadgate were rapidly being developed & seemed to tower over the market. Two homeless guys are sitting on discarded wooden crates having a beer & chatting to a trader whilst a guy in the foreground helps himself to a cabbage. <image:caption>Self Portrait with salmon & cream cheese bagel, 1991. Self portrait in leather jacket & lace-up boots, a fairly typical look in the late 1980s, siting in the wooden-panelled kitchen of a Georgian house in Spitalfields where I lived at the time. It had a non-stop dripping tap over a big butler sink, and no heating apart from the Calor gas-heater on wheels. I'm drinking coffee from a Hackney Empire mug (you can just make out the 'E' of Empire) & have taken a bite out of a smoked-salmon & cream cheese bagel, from Brick Lane Bagel bakery. The inspiration was from a portrait by the Dutch artist Jan Steen of a girl eating an oyster. I've always liked the mischief in his characters' expressions. This relief was exhibited in the Royal Portrait Gallery's BP show in 1991 & now keeps my parents company in their home.</image:caption>

Images of people at work, at their desks, the way they made calls, used their computers to help capture the atmosphere of a typical day in the office. As there are over 60 characters it appears a fairly squashed office, the desks & chairs have been used as a way of dividing the space. I had a small desk on the trading floor & got to learn of various office shenanigans that was suggested I include in discreet ways. Not sure the people involved ever noticed, so if they should ever stumble on this website they might find out. There was a woman having an affair with one of her colleagues who can be seen sitting next to her, on her computer screen is a small yellow sticker saying her husband called. There are lots of other incidents which I will leave for you to find out or imagine. I’m wandering at the back of the room, top left with sketch book in hand wearing a grey jumper.</image:caption>

I was given an orange jacket to wander with a sketch book to capture the scene, as “a runner”, the back of my head can be spotted with a plaid, far right side. Rapid hand signals & sign communication happened as the numbers on the overhead sign boards changed. The sketches were used as reference to compose the relief image.</image:caption>

I was told to look as business like as possible, to be able to spend time on the trading floor taking photographs & blending with the environment. The office had great views over Kowloon seen through the large windows. The relief was made in London as at that time I was not yet living in HK, pre digital cameras & internet, many images had to be sent by post. The box like computers & telephone wires now look very dated. Apparently it ended up in the World Trade Centre so maybe it is no more…</image:caption>

I had a studio in one of the workers cabins & spent over a year based on site. The sand coloured map is the completed shape of the platform. Specialist Dutch Dredging ships sucked sand & mud from the seabed to build the platform (top centre). Local ferries transported people to work (right). Divers helped build the sea walls & place concrete blocks at the waters edge. Derrick lighters & dumper trucks shifted rocks (lower left). <image:caption>R.B.S. New Headquarters Edinburgh, offices for MACE. Fibreglass relief painted in oils 96 x 66cms Office scene of the construction team. Designing the composition & fitting in all the people is always a huge challenge & usually involves office politics. I have a tendency, not deliberate, to make the least important people appear high profile, as they often tend to be the most colourful. Whenever possible I try to spend as much time in the actual environment, as its the small details that make the images come alive, the way people sit at their computers & interact, all help in putting together the final composition. The most difficult commissions are to work from publicity shots of people staring directly at the camera smiling with no background.</image:caption>

They commissioned a similar relief to display alongside the CLK relief which already was in heir head office in Beijing. To commemorate the building of a deep water port in Gwadar. Unlike many of the previous construction projects I’ve had a studio based on site, this project was already complete, so together with directors who’d been based in Pakistan we spent hours going through images that summed up the feel of life on site. Painted on site in the Marine workshop, Above is a large dredger head used to suck up sand & mud from the sea bed as part of the reclamation process, it constantly needed repairs from being ground down by debris & sand. It was a great subject to sketch, with orange clad welders sparking up their welding rods inside rusty sea worn structures.</image:caption>

It had an open kitchen where you could go & choose the cuts from the roasting tray straight out of the oven. These along with other sketches caught the attention of a director who asked if I would be interested to record more processes…. and so as I said in my intro… if you keep a diary one day it will keep you……</image:caption>

<image:caption>Road Sweep, GSK construction site. A1 watercolour and pencils on paper 2000-1 This was the view from a temporary studio, where I was based during the construction of GSK new headquarters, London. I’d regularly hear the sound as the road sweep went round the site squirting out jets of water with its big brushes cleaning the streets. Working on building sites I became very aware of the daily routine & cycles & became fascinated by the often mundane but essential processes that are part of creating these huge infrastructures.</image:caption>
